Q. Give a brief description of your business. What product(s) or service(s)
do you provide?
We feature handmade gifts and items including quilts, pillows, towel, bath and
kitchen décor as well as lodge, cabin and rustic décor.
Q. How did you come up with your business name? Does it have any special
meaning?
Since we do all types of sewing and stitcheries I wanted a name that encompasses
all of this and the word stitcheries does that. And what do you use to
sew.....needles and pins. So that is how we came up with the name.
Q. How long have you been in business, and how did you get involved in this
business?
Needles-n-Pins Stitcheries has been in business for one year, but we have
had other business over the course of 20 years. I have quilted, sewn and crafted
for 20+ years and when I retired I wanted to use all those years of experience
to make quality handmade items. I also love to design so this was also an outlet
for this.
Q. What was your most successful idea?
So far my little stitchery pillows have been the most successful. These pillows
are all hand stitched by me and they are my own designs that I created and
stitch on the pillows. I just love to come up with all the cute designs and I
have so much around me that inspires me for these designs.
Q. What are some of the pitfalls one faces when owning one's own business?
Owning an online business is very, very time consuming. It take a lot of time
constantly promoting your business within the online community. Also, the
competition is extremely high and getting your product in front of the consumer
takes a lot of time. The time you spend doing this takes away the time to create
products so you have to manage your time well.
Q. What is the best business advice you've received?
Don’t give up. If you have a dream keep working at it and it will come.
Q. What would you do differently if you were starting all over?
Since I have been in business before I wouldn’t have done anything different
this time. I took my time setting up my websites, researching products and
reading. Maybe one thing I would have done was be more familiar with social
media.......I am so lost when it comes to that, but I am learning.
Q. What are your future plans or dreams for your business?
To keep growing and continue making sales and meeting new customers. Some day
maybe open and brick and mortar store so we have a large outlet for our items.
Q. Tell us an inspirational or humorous story about your business?
I do a lot of summer markets in our area as we are a high tourist area and we
get a lot of wind. One day when we were all set up doing the market it was
exceptionally windy and one of the vendors that was across from me had not
anchored her canopy down and the wind caught her canopy and picked it up and it
went flying out into the ocean and there she sat with no tent! We all had a good
laugh over that one. :)
Q. What advice would you give to someone who wants to go into business?
Do your research....research competition, prices and products. Get your
paperwork and finances in order and most of all......follow your dream.
